This picture is really hard to look at … after 28 seasons as the Cowboys head coach and one my even argue the most innovative and successful head coaches in the entire game of football.
He was woefully betrayed by fans and his own players in a way. They gave up in his final season. going 3-13 watching one of the greatest franchise in American sports if not the greatest crumble around him … An empire not inherited but build with blood, sweat, and brain power over nearly 30 years.
This one picture over all the shots of Tom Landry over the years is the most telling of the last few years. You hear the interviews with the players who made fun of him behind his back, who didn’t care, who didn’t buy into the man anymore. The Sports writers who thought he was crazy, who resented and called for his head looking for an interesting story. It ended with the big ego and god like delusions of a Jerry Jones firing him, encouraged by the same writers like Skip Bayless. He was fired … humiliated, by a man who took a team that Landry was rebuilding, who would win three Super Bowls with key players that where then drafted by Landry.
When I see Jerry Jones raping and saying really dumb things.
I remember this picture, the quiet stoic sorrow … and know what the legacy should be, not what it is now.
Money and drummed up headlines don’t buy class.
Though still a Cowboy fan till the end … I know that class died a long time ago in Dallas and now all that remains of it is a statue in front of a stadium and a picture on this tumblr.
With a hope for glory won not with money or publicity but with honor …
Some day.
